Internodia is a proposal for a primary school in Bergschenhoek, the Netherlands. With a strong focus on future adaptability, biobased materials and demountability, the project is designed as a fully timber construction.
The name of the building is derived from Latin and refers to the knots of a wooden branch, the points from which new branches grow. In the same way, children are meant to grow within the building, preparing them for their future life.
The middle of the building serves as a central “knot” that connects two branches, one dedicated to educational functions and the other to semi-public functions, including the sports hall and a public library.
In this central space, two axes come together to form a diamond-shaped volume with a glass roof, allowing daylight to beam down onto the lower podium of the central auditorium.
