The project aims to recognize the value of the intangible cultural heritage, such as music, dance, traditional medicine, and cuisine of San Basilio de Palenque (the first slave-free town in the Americas), which was designated as intangible cultural heritage by the UN in 2005. This will be achieved through a community center that celebrates the preserved African traditions.
The main challenge in this region is that the lack of suitable community spaces has hindered the development of cultural activities. The project therefore focuses on researching both the physical and spatial characteristics of the traditional Palenque house from construction methods to preserved African traditions in order to develop an architectural design.
